SLAD:Broken Lives, Bright Hopes: Green Trailer
My trailer is finally done! Yay! Thank you too Fan for helping me a ton with this. Thank you, Shawn, for beta-ing. And you guys probably don't want to hear me ramble on forever, so here you go. (Please let the cut be right.)
It was a bleak Sunday afternoon. Gray skies set the mood of the day. Today marked three big events in my family: my mom and dad’s anniversary, my sister Fan’s birthday, and the day my dad left my mom. My mom was a mean woman who treated all with hate. It was a surprise she was ever married in the first place. She blamed my dad leaving on Fan, but then again, according to her almost everything was Fan’s fault. Fan constantly had bruises and cuts on her skin. Today she had a cut across her cheek, and that was the only visible mark from last night’s horror show.
“Cap! You know what today is, right? Not just my birthday but my twelfth birthday!” Fan proclaimed, excitement filling her words. I had been fearing this day. On my twelfth birthday, I had been given a weapon. A weapon that was sitting next to me now, my naginata “Espanda,” a spear like staff with a blade like a sword. It had a button on the side that transformed it into a pair of LMGs. That was the day that I entered into the family ‘business’ of thievery. I never wanted Fan to be forced to grow up so fast like I had, but after today, there was no way to protect her anymore.
A plain cardboard box was dropped on the table by Mom. She didn’t even take the time to wrap it. Before Fan could open the box that would end what little childhood she had had, I handed her my gift, a small package wrapped in a purple paper. After the paper was shredded off and the package torn open, all of our eyes rested on a small, silver, heart-shaped locket. She slowly opened it, revealing a picture of me and her taken a few weeks back.
“I love it!” She exclaimed as she nearly knocked me out of my chair with a hug.
After she had settled back down in her chair, she opened the box Mom had given her. Inside laid a well-word whip that sparkled with red Dust. She took it out and examined it carefully, a smile fell upon her face as she ran over to hug Mom.
“Thank you, Mommy! It’s wonderful!” She said right before she was pushed to the ground.
“Get up and stop with those ridiculous hugs,” Mom demanded.
Fan scurried back to her seat. This was a usual thing, and I would normally help Fan away and try to stay out of Mom’s reach until she calmed down. This time though, something in my snapped. I gripped my naginata that had been laying next to me in my hands and faced Mom. “That’s it. No more. I’m done and so is Fan. I’ve stood back and let you hit her enough times!” Mom looked genuinely surprised. I had never yelled at her before. “I’m taking Fan with me. We are leaving, and there is nothing you can do about it.”
“You’re going no where,” She said while pulling out the sword that always hung at her hip.
“I’d like to see you try to stop me.” I got into a fighting stance. For once, I was thankful for all the training that I thought was unnecessary.
“Cap, what’s going on?” Fan asked, gripping her whip and looking back and forth between me and Mom.
“Fan, take your whip and leave please. I don’t want you staying here.”
She turned towards Mom. “I’ll leave when you leave.”
“Fan!” She could be so stupid and reckless sometimes. I ran after her straight towards Mom. Mom knocked Fan to the ground easily before I could make my way over to her. Fan crumpled to the ground, but I could still see her chest moving. Thank goodness she was breathing. Mom then advanced on me. She brought her sword up so it was lined up with me neck, and it was coming fast towards me. I brought my naginata up and blocked the attack before stepping back and using the range advantage that the almost spear like naginata gave me to lunge at Mom.
She stepped out of the way, laughing. “You really think you can beat your own mother in a duel?” She then swept her word towards my knees in an attempt to make me fall.
I jumped over her blade. “You are no longer my mother.” I swung again, this time at her stomach, trying to avoid being blocked by her sword. I could feel it the moment my naginata made contact. She fell over, coughing.
“You girls will get nowhere without me.”
“Watch us,” I turned away from her, picking up Fan before walking out the door.

“How long will you be gone, Cap?” Fan asked me. I leave for Beacon today. In fact, I leave in only a few minutes.
“Four years if everything goes to plan.” I’ll get my team. Maybe I’ll be team leader. So many things could happen. Four years is a long time.
“Wow, I’m going to miss you.”
“I’ll miss you too. You’ll be fine without me though, right?”
“I should be good. Gosh, I’m fifteen. I don’t need my older sister taking care of me anymore.”
“Aw, my little sister is all grown up, I guess.”
“Yep!”
“I should get going. I’m going to be late if I don’t,” Fan pulled me into a hug, “Bye, Fan. Don’t have too much fun while I’m gone, alright?”
“Bye, Cap, and no promises.”
“I really should be going now.”
She stepped back from me. “See you when you get back.”
“See you soon, Fan.” And with that, I was off to Beacon.
