Chapter Thirty-One

Lost Arcane

Edge of the city, Sector SOV. March 22, 2272. Time instance 842N.

“Shawn!” Tac raced through the crowds of rebels as they settled in to treat the wounded and take stock of the dead. “Shawn!” She looked between faces frantically, pushing past people in her desperation to find him. “Shawn!”

Her eyes locked on Emma and she immediately grabbed her arm. “Emma! Emma, have you seen Shawn?”

Emma frowned. “No. I thought you guys were near each other in the battle?”

“We were! We were, but we got separated! Emma, I saw him get shot in….get shot through….there was this...this energy blast, and it….” Tac felt tears welling in her eyes. “I tried to get to him but I couldn’t find him, it took too long, Emma what if he’s dead what if he’s gone Emma I can’t-”

Emma grabbed Tac’s shoulders and looked her in the eyes. “Tac! Tac, it’ll be okay. We’ll find him, okay? We’ll find him. He’s okay.”

Tac shuddered. “How do you know?”

“I know Shawn.” Emma took Tac’s hand, ignoring the sharp edges of her metal fingers, and led her through the crowd, looking around and shouting Shawn’s name.

Emma seemed to see something and led Tac to the edge of the crowd. “Geek! Geek, have you seen Shawn?”

Oddly enough, Geek took a moment to look up. She had been leaning back against a wall with her eyes shut. Normally she was alert at all times, at least around a battle, and reacted to her name being said instantly. She seemed troubled, her eyes duller than usual.

“Not recently, no. Why?”

“Because we’re not sure if he’s alive or dead. Tac saw him get hit with an energy blast, but…”

“Oh.” Geek took her weight off the wall. “He’s fine, at least as far as that’s concerned. I’m pretty sure he’s walking around here somewhere. I’d like to see him myself and answer that alive or dead question.”

Tac and Emma exchanged glances.

“Wh-what do you mean?” Tac asked, not sure she wanted to know the answer.

“When Shawn got hit, I panicked and cast an amalgamation of fragments of vaguely helpful spells on him.”

“You threw a magical clusterfuck at him?” Emma demanded.

“I panicked! It was that or let him die!” Geek protested. “Come on. Let’s go find him.” She led the way through the crowd, which parted around her. It was automatic to move out of the way of a determined demon, even if she wasn’t that tall or obviously threatening.

They found him several minutes later at the other edge of the crowd, seeming like he had just managed to escape the throng of humanity himself. He was about to sit down when he heard the three of them calling his name and he turned around. He grinned upon seeing them and bounded over, but what Tac saw made her and Emma stop in their tracks.

A massive hole had been blasted through Shawn’s chest, clear to the other side. He didn’t seem affected by it and hesitated when he drew closer.

“...What?”

Tac shakily pointed a metal finger at him. He glanced down in confusion and an instant expression of horror spread across his face. He scrambled backwards and fell, as if trying to get away from it. He let out a series of panicked noises that only made Tac start freaking out more.

Geek groaned and held her head in her hands. “Should have warned you about that. Although I would have expected Shawn at least to notice.” She grabbed Shawn’s arm and helped him to his feet. “You’re okay. I hit you with some kind of unique spell that’s apparently keeping you from noticing that or dying to it. We need to get it healed up, though. Who knows what kinds of problems it could cause.”

“WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO TO ME?!”

“I saved your life!” Geek protested. “Look, you didn’t even know it was there! It was this or death!”

“Tac lost her hands, Shawn lost most of his internal organs. A match made in heaven,” Emma grumbled.

“Heaven is an awful and corrupted place,” Geek told her. “In any case, Shawn, I’m not sure exactly what to call what’s going on with you but you seem alive enough.”

“Alive enough? What am I, a zombie?”

“Not quite, no. You’d lose most of your mental facilities.” Geek circled around him a few times. “I’ll have to look into this more after we take out SOV and see if there’s anything we can do about your...interesting wound.”

“Interesting wound?” Tac demanded. “That’s what you’re calling it?”

“So his chest cavity is less chest and more cavity. He’s fine, isn’t he?”

Tac had to concede that point. She shivered and sat down, feeling too many emotions at once.

She hoped this would clear up soon.

~~~
Kyir raised an eyebrow as Fall almost tripped over her own feet in her attempt to reach Seven as quickly as possible. She immediately shoved what looked like one of those doctor-needle-liquid-stickers full of cloudy liquid into Nine’s hands. Whatever those are called.
“Wazzat?” Scara’s voice mumbled sleepily from where she sat on the floor, looking up at the proceedings around her.
“Nanobots that the cyborgs didn’t fucking remember until now. They can help heal.” Kyir crossed his arms as Nine injected the nanobot soup (that really was the best name for it, Kyir thought) around Seven’s wounds.
“What! Why didn’t you ssssay somethin’? Coulda not...passed….out….” Scara slumped and fell unconscious once more, almost making Kyir laugh.
“So tell me how you managed to get fucked by the nine thousand unit.”
Seven looked at him oddly. “I didn’t. He almost killed me.”
Kyir groaned. “That’s what I meant, asshole. How did you manage that?”
“He’s superior in combat- all nine thousand units are. There’s not much to tell. Although, he was a bit odd. He didn’t have a robotic right eye, but perhaps it was just modified. It was black, which I’m led to believe isn’t a normal human eye color.”
Kyir stiffened. “Black? What did he look like?” Calm down, Kyir. There’s probably plenty of guys out there with black eyes.
Seven shrugged. “Kinda like you, if you were made into a nine thousand unit. He would probably have been about as tall as you, but it’s hard to tell when they’re that modified.”
“Geek mentioned something about him seemingly predicting what her spell would do even when the other units couldn’t,” Nine mentioned.
Seven blinked in confusion. “I missed that. Explain?”
“Well, a few times she’d shoot a fireball at a unit and, as they moved to avoid or block it, it would suddenly throw itself into the ground and throw up a ton of debris so the cyborg couldn’t see a second blast coming. She mentioned that the nine thousand unit didn’t really act like it was about to be hit- like it knew the blast would turn last-second.”
“Huh. Weird.”
Nine sighed. “You don’t have an explanation for that either, do you?”
“No. It’s not universal amongst nine thousands, so either he’s unique or there was a patch to the-”
“I need to see Xela.” Kyir turned and immediately left, ignoring Nine and Seven’s questions as to why. They trailed along behind him, even Seven- his wounds were almost entirely healed and only the surface was damaged by this point.
Don’t let it be him. By the gods, please don’t let it be him.
He felt Cataclysm fall into step beside him and even his current mood couldn’t stop the flicker of a smile from crossing his face. At least that was back to normal.
He almost kicked down the door to the building, scaring the shit out of Tanadin and the other guards inside.
“Xela!” Kyir barked. “Can you hack into SOV’s files on its individual cyborgs?”
Xela glanced over her shoulder at him. “Yeah, why?”
“I need you to look up unit 9122-α. The local asshole.”
“Okay, give me a minute. Why?”
“Just do it, okay? I want to...check something.” Make sure it’s not him. Make sure that the Mainframe didn’t do the last thing he’d want.
Several anxious minutes of Kyir pacing and Xela typing passed until she hissed softly at something that came up on-screen. “Kyir…”
“What?” Kyir stepped forward to look over her shoulder.
“I’m...I’m sorry.”
Kyir’s eye widened in absolute horror as he read, not getting very far before starting to shake. He felt Cataclysm grab his arm and he turned around to hug his friend, burying his face in his shoulder and letting Cataclysm wrap his feathered wings around him.
Unit 9122-α (previously known as Corvus Lu’ann).
Corvus Lu’ann.
Corvus…
“I’m sorry,” Cataclysm whispered. “Kyir…”
Kyir didn’t move for a good fifteen seconds. Fifteen seconds. That’s all I’ll let them see. Then, he stepped back and took a deep breath.
“We have to save him. We have to find a way to disconnect him from the Mainframe.”
“No,” Seven said instantly. Kyir bared his teeth and growled at him, about to demand why, but Seven plowed on. “Nine thousand units are wired differently than other units. When they’re disconnected from what they’re supposed to protect, they go on an unstoppable destructive rampage, destroying everything in sight. If they’re disconnected from the Mainframe for any longer than a minute or so, a chip in their heads will fry and render them useless in a near-death vegetative state. That can’t be reversed unless their human brain is healed and the chip is replaced, and the only copies of the chips are in the Mainframe itself. I don’t know how long they can last in that state, because trying to modify them most of the time will cause an immediate permanent shutdown.”
Kyir started shaking. “No. No. There has to be something we can do.”
“Why do you care?” Nine asked, frowning.
Kyir growled and jerked a thumb at the screen. “Corvus Lu’ann. My brother. My twin brother that I thought was dead. But it’s worse than that, it’s always worse than that. He’s alive, captured by the Mainframe, and there’s apparently no other option than to kill him! He’s alive, but we have to kill him!”
“He’s not alive,” Seven reasoned. “What little remains of his body is. Who he was is gone.”
Kyir’s eyes sparked. “Do you think that’s supposed to make me feel better? Because it doesn't! It makes me feel like shit! What do you know of being your own person, anyway? You haven’t developed a fucking personality in the months since you’ve been disconnected from the Mainframe!”
Nine puffed up. “Leave him alone! He’s far more metal than most cyborgs, he just needs-”
“What? More time? Because guess what, fuckhead! That’s what we don’t have! Now help me think up a fucking way to save Corvus or get out of my face!” His voice had risen to a roar, fury making his limbs shake and his blood burn as lightning danced out from behind his shades.
Cataclysm carefully hugged Kyir from behind, wrapping his wings around him once more. “Shhh. Breathe.”
“I don’t WANT to breathe! I want my brother back! I WANT MY BROTHER!” Kyir howled, struggling to get away from Cataclysm but the demon held him tightly. “LET ME GO!”
“Not until you calm down! Ow! Stop electrocuting me, okay? It’s not doing anything to help! All you’re doing is hurting me and yourself. Kyir, you’re making it worse. You can’t think when you’re angry, and you need to think to save Corvus.”
“But...but…!”
“Kyir. I need you to take a deep breath and hold it for a few seconds. Exhale slowly. Anger is a problem we both have, but you need to focus.”
Kyir reluctantly followed his friend’s instructions, feeling the fury die down a bit when he exhaled. “Corvus…”
“We’ll do what we can. But we need you to be thinking. Okay?”
“Okay.” Kyir took a few more deep breaths and Cataclysm released him. He stepped back and sat in a chair near Xela, who was in another window and typing furiously. “Okay. Magic will be useless against him, as he can see the ley lines and knows what magic will do the second its cast, giving him a chance to counter it, not to mention the whole ‘nine thousand unit’ thing. A faraday cage won’t work either, as the second he’s disconnected from the control center, he’ll just destroy it instead of stop, right?”
“Right.” Seven looked at him curiously. “I can’t see an alternative to destroying him.”
“Shut up. We need to think about this. If we could get him disconnected from the Mainframe, maybe he’d live long enough for us to get that chip for him-”
“Not likely,” Nine interrupted. “I’m sorry, Kyir. But I don’t think they can last more than a week or two like that. I’m not sure. It’s not a solid bit of information on the timing- just calculations.”
“Shut up and let me think.” Kyir got up and started pacing, mumbling and dismissing option after option until he just punched the wall. “I’ve got nothing. What little could maybe work can’t because he’s too strong. I…” He shuddered. “No. I won’t give up. I can’t give up on Corvus. He doesn’t deserve that…”
“We can’t wait forever,” Seven told him. “If you can’t think of something, we’ll have to move out and do what we can to neutralize him, one way or another. We don’t have the time to think of an elaborate solution. We need to try another assault.”
Nine stared at him. “Are you fucking nuts? That went terribly last time.”
Seven shot him a look. “Do you have any better ideas?”
Nine didn’t respond to that. Seven turned and started to leave the building.
“I’m preparing another attack. Either think of something now or we’ll have to destroy him.”
“I’m not helping you kill my brother.”
Seven didn’t respond to that. He had already left.
~~~

Seven was all too aware of what a terrible idea this was as they charged the control center once more, but the reality of the situation was that they didn’t have any other options. He moved out of the way of a bullet but ignored its source, scanning the area to find the nine thousand unit.

It didn’t take long for him to show himself, leaping into the battle and cutting down several people in a single swing. Seven’s eyes narrowed and he picked up the speed, running to get close to the nine thousand unit, who, according to Kyir, had once been Corvus Lu’ann.

“Leave him to me!” Seven roared as he raced past several elementals and a demon who were hesitantly pointing themselves in the direction of Corvus. “Let me take him on alone!”

“You’re going to fucking die!” someone that sounded suspiciously like Fan shouted, but he ignored both her and the warnings that were already appearing on his field of vision as Corvus swung to face him.

Corvus didn’t waste any time pausing for calculations, fully aware of what Seven was likely to do. He immediately swung at the smaller cyborg, Seven raising his metal arm to deflect the hit, barely moving fast enough to keep up with the nine thousand unit. And yet, even as he managed that, the computer side of his brain was calculating possible actions and outcomes and he was hollowly aware that he was out of options.

Just as it had when his systems were overloaded by kartzal, the computer part of his brain panicked. He was abruptly very aware as the human side of his brain woke up more than it ever had before. Seven deliberately shut his eyes- technically, the metal eye just lost focus for a moment- momentarily before reopening them.

I can do this. His thought wasn’t an assurance, but a fact, a statement to himself. I have done this.

As predicted, Corvus’ other arm swung at Seven’s unprotected right side and immediately he knew that he wasn’t fast enough to bring his left arm up to block the swing. And yet…

Screw the reasons, screw the logic, screw the world- I can do this, and I will! He brought up his right arm- his human arm- into the path of the blade where his prediction software showed would stop the blade, despite the flashing warnings about failure chances and the force behind Corvus’ arm relative to what his arm could withstand.

The blade on Corvus’ arm slammed into Seven’s comparatively small and weak arm, causing Seven to grunt in agony- but held. A twisted, pained smile pulled itself across Seven’s face as the machine part of his brain stopped panicking, registering the new information and presenting several options as to what he could do to Corvus’ now exposed body, the nine thousand unit not having anticipated a weak human arm being able to block the swing.

The blade on Seven’s left arm punched through Corvus’ body on a path that took it through several vital systems- power lines, reactors, and even one of the primary shield generators. A grimace crossed Seven’s face and he disengaged, leaping backwards with his robotic legs and landing a surprising distance away. To Seven, the fight seemed to have lasted an eternity, but it had only been a few seconds.

“Ley lines,” Corvus snarled, as if berating himself, and then shot him with the energy cannon on his shoulder.

Fortunately, the blast struck Seven on the left side of his chest, damaging the metal and frying some of the wiring inside but not punching a hole all the way through him. Before he could fully register the damage and what he could do from there, Corvus charged forward and delivered a nasty cut to his side.

The pain didn’t register, but the damage did.

Before Corvus could finish him off, darkness wrapped around them and, when it faded, Seven found himself being carried out of the fight by Nine while M darted around Corvus, distracting him from his previous target.

“His primary shield generator is shot,” Seven hissed. When Nine didn’t hear him, he repeated himself, louder.

“What?” Nine stopped where he was and stared at him before shaking his head and running again. “You….you...How?!”

“Don’t know. You...can get him.”

“The only thing I’m getting is you to a medic. Fall! Where the fuck are those nanobots?! And dammit! Get Kyir while you’re at it, this asshole has some circuits fried!” Nine put him down at the edge of the battle as Fall returned with the nanobots. “I’ll see what I can do about taking him out. You quit getting yourself killed.”

A twisted smile crossed Seven’s face. “I can do that.”

~~~
Emma really didn’t like feeling useless.
And yet, that’s what she was: useless. She hung back from the battle, just watching as her friends engaged the nine thousand unit- a nine thousand unit that Cataclysm had informed her was Corvus, Kyir’s brother.
Ouch. It wasn’t a huge surprise that Kyir was sitting out the battle- who would want to kill their own brother?
Not to mention he’s trying to fix Seven.
Emma’s hands tightened into fists as she watched several members of the Black Market charge into combat with Corvus, actually managing to land ranged hits now that his shield was on the fritz. M had managed to damage one of his weapons- from something Cataclysm had mumbled, it likely launched some kind of explosives- so much that he couldn’t use it, which made Emma wonder if they could do this after all.
Looking at Cataclysm as he fought, though, wiped even more of her doubt away.
When he charged, he spread his wings and she could have sworn the feathers sharpened, hardening into glossy black knives that looked sharp enough to cut her eyes when she looked at them. When bullets came his way, he would fold his wings in front of him like a shield, and his sharpened feathers blocked the shots. He would encase individual feathers in ice and flap his wings, flinging spikes of ice at the cyborg that were more annoyances than anything else, but he was distracting enough to allow the others- M, Zahnra,Geek, Vel’kex, and Nine- to get some decent hits in on him.
Interestingly enough, he seemed to be the best at predicting and avoiding the magical attacks, despite them usually being the most unpredictable form of attack. Emma wasn’t sure why this was- maybe it was a nine thousand unit thing- but she wasn’t left wondering for long.
Corvus suddenly turned and slashed at Cataclysm, aiming for his neck. Cataclysm flapped his wings to carry him out of the way, but the blade of Corvus’ arm got lodged in the collar around Cataclysm’s neck for a moment before he pulled back and away. The collar sparked and Cataclysm's eye widened when he realized that its effects had been nullified.
He snarled and ripped the now-useless and damaged collar off of his neck, tossing it to the ground. He spread his wings, encasing his feathers in ice that glowed with what looked like flame before sending an entire wave of sharp projectiles at Corvus. The nine thousand unit moved out of the way, dancing around a barrage of flames that leapt up from where the shards of ice struck-
-and directly into a spike of darkness from M that shot right through his neck and made him freeze, eyes wide in shock as he glanced down at the wound.
“Primary directive failed,” he mumbled as Geek and Vel’kex focused their attacks and blasted him with all the power they could muster, Cataclysm joining in with what sounded like a roar of pain and fury.
It hurts him to do this, Emma realized. He’s killing his best friend’s brother. She swallowed the emotional pain that rang in her heart as she thought that, watching as the flames died down and the smoking metal husk of what was once Corvus slumped to the ground.
“CHARGE THE CONTROL CENTER!” Nine bellowed. “THE NINE THOUSAND UNIT IS DOWN!”
Cheers swept across the rebels and they advanced forward, fighting off the remaining cyborgs with newfound energy.
Emma found Seven running beside her, still somewhat damaged but apparently well enough to be going back into battle against inferior units. She greeted him and he responded with a nod, starting to pass her up but pausing when they heard Tanadin’s voice.
“Seven!”
He stopped running and turned to address the fire elemental, still in her human form, as she stormed towards him. Emma stopped as well, curious.
Tanadin stood right in front of Seven and glared at him, baring her teeth in an inhuman display of anger. “Stop getting yourself almost killed by nine thousand units, asshole! This is the third fucking time!” She shoved him halfheartedly, her anger already melting away. “Just...quit worrying me, okay? I have enough to stress out about without you throwing yourself directly into the mouth of danger at every opportunity!”
“It’s not like I’m trying to get hurt!” Seven protested.
“Whatever! I don’t...I don’t...don’t die, okay?” Tanadin stepped forward and hugged him tightly to try to disguise that she was shaking. “I couldn’t...we couldn’t do this without you, okay?”
“I know. I won’t die.”
“Good.” Tanadin stepped back and crossed her arms, fire swirling around her body as she transformed.
“Now let’s go take a fucking control center.” She grinned and led the two of them back into the mob as they approached, immediately leaping at a cyborg and letting Seven help her dispatch it. Emma caught sight of several two thousand units crowding around Cap and charged them, swinging her sword and yelling to try to get their attention. She ducked under a swing and slashed back at the offending cyborg, growling as it parried. She raised her sword for another swing.
As she moved, Cap shouted a warning. Emma felt a sharp pain at the base of her skull and the world went black.
“You threw a magical clusterfuck at him?” Emma demanded.
Shawn consider yourself clusterfucked XD
“Tac lost her hands, Shawn lost most of his internal organs. A match made in heaven,” Emma grumbled.
Shac a match made in dismemberment XD
“So his chest cavity is less chest and more cavity. He’s fine, isn’t he?”
Shawn McCavity, I don't why just I think this should be Shawn's new surname XD
“Wazzat?” Scara’s voice mumbled sleepily from where she sat on the floor, looking up at the proceedings around her.
“Nanobots that the cyborgs didn’t fucking remember until now. They can help heal.” Kyir crossed his arms as Nine injected the nanobot soup (that really was the best name for it, Kyir thought) around Seven’s wounds.
Seriously guys, someone get me some bloody coffee XD
Dear God no. Kyir finds out that his long lost twin is still 'alive' but the only option is to kill him. Shit. Plus from what I what I gather even if they could disconnect him, Corvus would hate himself and want to die anyway. >.<
Cataclysm carefully hugged Kyir from behind, wrapping his wings around him once more. “Shhh. Breathe.”
“I don’t WANT to breathe! I want my brother back! I WANT MY BROTHER!” Kyir howled, struggling to get away from Cataclysm but the demon held him tightly. “LET ME GO!”
Poor Kyir :( Accept the BroTP love from Cataclysm, accept it.
GO SEVEN GO! ;o;
Please tell me that Seven has a metal skeleton like Wolverine's and that the nanobots still in his system will take care of his arm, or am gonna have to fix that ^^"
“The only thing I’m getting is you to a medic. Fall! Where the fuck are those nanobots?! And dammit! A twisted smile crossed Seven’s face. “I can do that.”
*opens one eye* Seriously Seven you were out there for 5 fucking minutes, give me some time to rest will you for fucks sake....*closes eye again and rolls over*
fREAKING HECK THAT WAS MEAN NOW IM ACTUALLY CRYING AND I NEVER DO THAT EXCEPT WHEN NIA AND TRYMDAS DIED! (Spoilers, by the way.) That was so well done and the writing and plotting was incredible but I hated it because I knew Corvus had to die and I felt so bad for Kyir. My only consolation for him is that now his brother isn't working for the Mainframe any longer. He's not a cyborg, just like Kyir said Corvus would want.
And now, a few quotes. I believe Scara missed one of my favorites, which is “When Shawn got hit, I panicked and cast an amalgamation of fragments of vaguely helpful spells on him.” Ah yes, Geek, that's a very good explanation.
She did do this one, but “What! Why didn’t you ssssay somethin’? Coulda not...passed….out….” Scara slumped and fell unconscious once more, almost making Kyir laugh.
Poor Scara. XD
Tanadin stood right in front of Seven and glared at him, baring her teeth in an inhuman display of anger. “Stop getting yourself almost killed by nine thousand units, asshole! This is the third fucking time!” She shoved him halfheartedly, her anger already melting away. “Just...quit worrying me, okay? I have enough to stress out about without you throwing yourself directly into the mouth of danger at every opportunity!"
Poor Tanadin. Also poor Tac. How about just poor everyone?
Also, just for good measure, darn you, Tanadin, and your amazing, heartbreaking writing. I wish they could have saved Corvus. (If this were my book, they would have.)
Ah yes, I just went for Emma's line underneath that about Geek have magically clusterfucked Shawn over XD
I love that quote of mine, also I think Kyir is starting to like me. :D
It was sad but inevitable about Corvus, but like we both said Corvus wouldn't have wanted to live as a cyborg if they had managed to disconnect him from the Mainframe and he'd remembered who he'd been :(
Just wondered if Kyir's presence would have caused Corvus to rememeber
Ooooo, so Seven was a spellcaster before he became a cyborg then :P
Nope don't trust you with Emma's character but I think that there was so much going on with Kyir and Corvus that concern for Emma will prbably come at the start of the next chapter when we find out exactly what hit her. XD
With a 9000 unit on their side the fight against the Mainframe would be over too quickly and where's the fun in that? XD
I'm so, so sorry about the spoiler. I was really tired and kind of keyed up and pretty stressed, so I didn't think about it. I usually avoid spoilers like the plague for this very reason. I feel really bad now, especially since I can't edit it. As an anon I guess I have to be extra careful about not saying anything I regret later. *buries head in a pillow because I'm embarrassed and wish that I could take back the spoiler*
YES LISTEN TO TANADIN I WAS AN IDIOT AND PUT MAJOR SPOILERS FOR OTHER STORIES IN THE COMMENTS SO REALLY TRULY DON'T SCROLL DOWN!
I guess this is a lesson in not posting things on the internet that you'll regret later. I'm usually really good at that part of internetting! :(
*accepts food gratefully because I haven't had breakfast and I'm hungry* Thank you for being so nice. While I don't expect to never make a mistake again, I think this is one mistake that probably won't happen again. I'll be careful. :)
And yes, now I have yet another reason to want an account. I'm going to have to start writing these down at this point.
