Souls - Chapter 5: Someone

Is there anybody out there.
Hey you.

Her heart skipped a beat when she saw where the case was supposed to be. Heart beating faster, she escaped her hollow to scan the clearing. She ran circles around trees and searched in every nook and cranny.

The case was gone! Questions flashed through her head. Who took it? When did it happen? Why didn’t she inspect the case earlier?

Eventually, she gave up. She resumed her spot flat on the forest floor with the feeling of agony rising in her chest. She stared up into the canopy and breathed in and out. She closed her eyes and let light dance on her eyelids.

Why did she let this happen?

She opened her eyes again. Finally, she took a deep breath. The fresh air warded off the pain and replaced her senses with numbness. Her eyes stared blankly back up at the green leaves. Something she’d wanted to do had burned inside her. She didn’t know if it had to do with the protective branches or how the leaves always seemed to have a response. Maybe as each leaf grew more defined to her vision, her connection to them grew, but nevertheless, it felt only appropriate to do what she did.

“Are you up there?” she said. Her voice was still rough, but she continued. “I don’t know what you are, but every time I look up at you, your green is always brighter.”

A light breeze brushed the leaves. Every word felt like another weight being taken off her chest. She continued.

“You’ve been here longer than I’ve been here. I bet you know what happened down here. What is it?”

She hesitated.

“I bet you know everything.”

As the wind picked up, a chorus of leaves called out. The leaves above her shook wildly. Something peaceful resonated within her. She continued to stare dreamily into the canopy even when the wind died down.

After some time had passed in the bonding silence, her stomach began to growl. She got up and stretched, and she took a short forest stroll to the brook. Light and wind followed in her wake with sounds of the forest commentating her journey. She arrived at the stream, and looking into the water, she saw differences in the water. The previous day, she could only see the rushing currents, but now she saw her face among smooth pebbles and sparkling water. It rushed by as she dipped her fingers down in the temperate flow.

The little island she had made stood strong, and she was happy to find the fruit sitting on it untouched.

She ate her fill and walked back to the clearing- a now familiar path. When she arrived, she noticed something new sitting perfectly in the center of all the trees. In the center sat a small branch full of green leave dotted with white buds.

Her eyes fixed on the branch, and her mouth gaped slightly. She kneeled down to pick up the branch. The leaves rustled softly, and the buds bounced lightly. She rubbed her thumb against the delicate petals. They were soft to the touch, and it graced the air with a modest, sweet scent.

She smiled up to the canopy and back to the branch. She stood and walked to the entrance of her den, and she rested it above the opening.

She was satisfied.

The sun was getting ready to set again, and that’s when she decided to ascend up the tree once again.

The smooth bark still gave her difficulty climbing, but she still made it up to the branches that had cradled her the night before. Up there on that branch, she once again became awestruck at the bright sky. The sun had not reached the horizon. Its glow created a halo around the sparse clouds, and she felt as if she could reach out and touch the sun beams. A warm, gentle breeze softly lifted her hair, and the tatters of her shirt waved against her skin. The night before, the trees below blurred together in her vision, but now it was as if she could see every shadow of every leaf. Peace set in, and at the same time, a fluttering feeling manifested in her chest.

She leaned back and watched the sun set, patiently waiting. The sun had a light show as it sank below the horizon, and when it disappeared leaving gold and red streaks, the smoke in the trees rose again. Moments passed by, and she could smell the ashes from far away.

That was when she adjusted her grip on the surrounding branches and lifted herself up. The leaves in front of her drooped slightly as she balanced herself steadily on two feat. Carefully, she removed one hand from the tree, and she cupped it against the side of her cheek.

“HELLOOOO!” she yelled. She listened to her voice echo throughout the forest. She called again. “HELLOOOO!” Between each call, she grew satisfaction from the smooth resonance. She continued calling until the smoke was gone and all the pinkish light disappeared from the sky. The chill of night began to waft over, and she began to drift away to sleep. She could’ve sworn she heard the ringing voices of angels singing back to her in response. Unlike the night before, they didn’t echo in her mind. Instead, their melody echoed throughout the forest. That time, she wasn’t asleep.

This is starting to remind me of Uprooted, one of my favorite books of all time, with all the voices and connections to the trees.

Still very interested in this, keep up the great work Sub.
So many questions and thoughts, but not enough to piece anything together yet. Very good!
