Have missed a few of my writing group sessions due to life stuff, so I thought I would take all of the prompts that I missed and try to include them in a funny little one shot. The prompts were: Monkey on my Back, Tip of the Iceberg, Consequences, The Blame Game.

Hopefully you enjoy this funny little story.

I should have known that my gift of an experience as ‘Zookeeper for A Day’ wouldn’t be as smooth as I had first hoped. Which was why I was now stuck in one of the bedroom enclosures with a baby Capuchin monkey on my back, well it was actually using the hood of my hoodie as a hammock; and it was refusing to climb back out of my hood, despite me trying to lure it over back over my shoulder with a piece of one of its favourite fruits.

I knew there would be consequences if I tried to forcibly move Charlie, the baby Capuchin monkey, who was making contented noises while curled up in my hood, trying to move Charlie without his cooperation could hurt him and/or upset him which could mean him hurting me. I pondered what to do, Graham my guide had only left me alone for a minute while he went to fetch some more treats for Charlie; I certainly didn’t want to end up being part of a blame game, blaming Graham for leaving me alone and Graham blaming me for foolishly turning my back on Charlie and exposing my hood which he had taken to be a hammock.

I sighed and tried once more to coax Charlie back over my shoulder with the piece of fruit he kept ignoring, as I did so I heard a deep raucous laugh from the entrance to the enclosure.

“I told you not to turn your back on him Chris.”

I turned to see Graham wiping a tear from his eye with his right hand and holding a bowl of chopped fruit in the other.

“It was only for a spilt second, help please, I can’t get him to move.” I pleaded.
Graham entered the enclosure and stepped behind me and laughed again.

“Well no wonder you were having such a tough time trying to coax him out, the little bugger’s fallen asleep. All your moving about must have rocked him off into a nap.”

“I can’t believe it. Outwitted by a sleepy baby monkey.” I groaned.

Graham chuckled, “If you think the Capuchins are bad, they’re just the tip of the iceberg, wait until you meet the Chimpanzees.”
