Final Backstory!

He was going to get out of here.

And he had a plan.

At midnight, the boy appropriately nicknamed The Dhadow slunk across the dark walls of the orphanage. His prison.

And now, he was breaking out.

The shadow had his trademark black cloak slung over him, making him nearly invisible along the black walls.   He was headed to the owner's antique collection.

The Shadow smiled as he gripped the ornate handle of the age old sword.  This one had been his favorite. He swiped the sword off the wall, along with another shorter sword, and strapped them in his cloak.

He then moved to the kitchen.  He quickly and quietly stuffed as much food and water bottles as he felt comfortable with. To be spiteful, he also stole the toaster. He then exited through the unlocked door.

He breathed deeply, getting ready for what he was about to do. He laughed at himself internally. He had made it from Texas to South Carolina before the police had finally caught him and put him in the orphanage. What was a trip across the city?

The Shadow jogged to a nearby building with a fire escape, slowly going over the plan in his head.  He would jump across buildings for a while to avoid the patrol cars. After the buildings were spaced too far apart, he would climb down and run to the power plant. From there, he would enter the forest and camp there for the night.

He arrived at the building and heard tires across a pavement. He flattened himself across the wall as the car passed by. A patrol car!  He had hoped he wouldn't run into one for a while. After it passed, he looked at the area around him.

He was in an older section of the city. Several boards were lying on the ground from where a window had once been boarded up.  The fire escape ladder was right above a dumpster.  After the patrol car passed, he grabbed two of the boards and stuck them under his cloak.  He then heard a rustling behind the dumpster.  He whipped out his sword and turned to the source of the noise.

The 5 people were wearing black hoodies with skulls on them.  And if that wasn't a red flag, each of them were sporting combat knives.  He tensed up, looking at the fire escape ladder.

"Hey kid..."  They said, slowly advancing towards him.  "Wanna play?"

That was enough.  He put the sword away and grabbed one of the boards from his cloak.  He jumped on the dumpster and prepared to fight.

The first 2 to come near him underestimated him.  He swung the board at one.  The board hit him in the temple, and the teen was sent sprawling to the side.  The other one tried to jump on the dumpster.  He swung the board down.  It cracked over the boy's skull, causing him to drop the knife.  The Shadow quickly swiped and pocketed the knife, then proceeded p the fire escape ladder.

"Hey, he's got Ernie's knife!"  One of the boys shouted.  "After him!"

Oh, great.

He finished his ascent and pulled out the sword, looking for a way to stop their ascent.  He found one.  The ladder was held by two clasps at the top, which were rusted and weak from age.  He pulled out his sword and prepared to chop.

Just then, the three kids began their ascent.  "You're gunna pay."  The top one said.  The Shadow smiled, swung his sword, and the clasp on the right broke.

The boys on the ladder almost lost their grip as the ladder took a sharp pivot left.  The fire escape groaned and looked to be on the verge of collapse.

He prepared to swing again.  The topmost one looked up.  "No!"  He shouted, grasping at the edge of the building.

The Shadow smiled.  "Good night."  He said as he swung and broke the final clasp.

The combined weight of the boys and the ladder was all it took to make the old fire escape platform collapse.  The boys fell down with the fire escape, the ladder landing on top of them.

The Shadow, smiling, began to run so he would be able to get to the next building.  Before he could, however, he heard a noise coming from behind him.

The kid who was at the topmost part of the ladder crawled back up.

He sneered. "This is where you die, kid!"  He shouted and charged.

Thinking fast, The Shadow whipped out a bad of peanuts and sliced it open with his sword.  The peanuts spilled over the floor, causing the man to stumble.  He ran over to the man and pushed him against the edge of the roof.  He then ran over to him.

"You can't..."  The man said.  The shadow didn't give him time to finish his sentence.

He kicked the man off the building. The man hit the opposite wall and fell like a rag doll down. He hit the ground with a satisfying thump.

The Shadow victoriously turned, ran, and jumped to the next building.

He then proceeded to jump across the buildings through the night to the old parking lot.

He met no more resistance.

The Shadow climbed down the side of the building into the old parking lot. Few people parked here anymore, and most of the cars had been abandoned.

The boy hopped into one of the cars. While crossing the country, he had driven a nicer car, so he was familiar with driving. The put the keys, which were on the dashboard, in the ignition and drove of. Luckily, he had put gas in the car last night.

He cruised down the street, making sure to keep under the speed limit so the cops didn't suspect anything. He had almost made it to the forest when the car ran out of gas. He cursed under his breath. He would have to go on foot from here.

He looked around, seeing that he was at the power plant.  Luckily, he didn't have far to go to reach the edge of the forest. From there he would set up camp and plan his next move.

Running out of the shadow of the car, he stayed in the shadows of street lamps until he got to the wall of the power plant. From there, he slunk across the wall until he reached the edge of the forest. He got in, and he was home free.

The Next Day

The shadow smiled and brushed his hands together. He had scavenged the forest this morning, looking for an axe to make cutting wood easier. Luckily, he had found one in even better shape then he had dared hope. He had taken vines and twigs and wound them together to make a surprisingly strong rope, which he used to make the base of his tree house.  All that remained now was to make the actual structure, something he had planned long ago.  Just as he hefted his axe ready to chop some wood from one of the many fallen trees in the area, a weak strand of rope above him snapped. The board fell on his head, and he blacked out.

The Shadow woke up and found himself in a forest. He had no idea how he had gotten there, or who he even was. He then saw a structure in the trees. Judging by the axe lying next to him, he figured he had built it.

He looked at the supplies around him. He had some bags of food, some water bottles, 2 swords, an axe, and some makeshift rope. He smiled.

"I can do something with this." He decided aloud, then went to work.

3 Days Before the Events of TWS

The Shadow wiped his brow from the training and noticed that the sun wasnhanging low. He took a bottle of spring water and drank it, then checked in the fire that was currently cooking the deer meat he would be having for the next few days.

He had done well over the past years. His tree house was spacious and suspended high above the ground. It had 2 ladders, one for regular use and one in case the first one broke, which hadn't happened yet. The wood was strong. The tree house had a bed made out of wood and soft moss he had collected, with a blanket made of fur.

The training dummies were logs that he cut, but didn't make any use out if. He was planning on expanding the tree house a bit more later.  That would have to be postponed, however, if his food crisis continued. The animals had been dying of a mysterious illness, and people had started coming in the forest more iften to hunt.   He smiled, remembering the legend that had..

been created of "The Shadow", which was what he now referred to himself as. Some even called him a "tree ninja," whatever that meant.

He went to bed after eating some the deer meat and storing it in his icebox underground.  He would have to make more trips to the restaurant if this shortage kept on for much longer.   He had found a soft spot for a little kid there who sometimes left food outside for the "tree ninjas."

The Shadow climbed up into the well built shelter and slept, unaware if the apocalypse that was about to occur.
