saladloveWell, It's the next best thing, at least.
Alice and Aureylian were twin sisters, although not identical. They only shared a few things, such as their emerald green eyes, flowing red hair - and their birthday. Today they were both turning eighteen.
“It took the entire morning but we’re finally done! This is so exciting!” Aureylian, very happy to be sharing an apartment with her sister, smiled.
“Sure is! Hey, it is our birthdays, so why don’t we treat ourselves to some lunch!” Alice replied, just as excited as Aureylian.
“That’s a great idea!” Aureylian responded, somewhat giddy. After a short discussion, the twins decided to head down to the nearby restaurant. On their way there, they passed by the local park to find a shady figure sitting on a bench. Sporting a black hoody and a five O’clock shadow, he lay on one of the shaded parts of the bench he was on. Alice simply ignored him, and Aurey followed her example.
When they arrived at the restaurant, they were seated quickly, and overall had a nice time. The service was amazing, the waiter was quick, and the food was delicious. As the meal came to an end, Alice thought it was a good idea to show her sister the gift she’d gotten.
“Hey Aurey, I was saving up some money, and I decided to get you this for your birthday.” Alice said as she pulled out a silver locket, which opened to picture of the two of them when they were six.
“Oh my goodness, Alice, this is amazing!” Aurey screamed (quietly, as they were in a restaurant), and pulled Alice in for a hug. “Hey, I got you something too!” Aurey then pulled out a silver bracelet she had in her purse, set with green gem in the middle of it - the same color as their eyes.
“Thank you so much Aurey! I’ll always wear it!” The meal was finished rather quickly, so the two split the check and started to head home. As they were walking by the park again Alice had an idea.
“Hey Aurey, do you wanna see some of my free run tricks I’ve been working on lately?”
“Sure, that’d be great!”
In response, Alice walked up to and then proceeded to run up to a wall, before doing a flip off of it and landing, but she quickly lost her balance and landed on her butt. Aurey and Alice shared a nice laugh when Alice looked up at her sister.
The strange man Alice had seen earlier walked over, and extended a hand to help lift Alice up. After grabbing the hand, Alice realized that the guys wasn’t actually that shady, it just must have been the angle of the sun when she looked at him.
“That was quite a tumble you took there.” The man said to her as he helped her up.
“Thanks, but I’m fine. I’ve still got to work on the landing on I guess; Nice to meet you!”
“My name is JT, and you are?”
“I’m Alice, and this is my sister Aurey, we’re twins even though we don’t look it.” At this Aureylian chimed in.
“I prefer to stay indoors, Alice loves going outside, but we’re still the best of friends!”
“Well, it’s nice to meet you both. Hey, I was about to go get some ice cream if you two would like to come with.” JT said to the two, but mostly to Aurey.
“Well we just had lunch, but it’s our birthdays so why not!” Aureylian replied, quite cheery.
The three of them were walking back down in the direction of the restaurant when a gunshot rang out .
“What was that?” Alice jumped, quickly looking around.
“Oh my gosh, we need to get inside! Here, my house isn’t too far away!”
It’s a gunshot, we should be going to the police, not to some guys house, especially one we just met! Thought Alice. “No, we’ll go to the police station, do you know where that is JT?”
“Sure, I’ll lead you too it.” JT replied, before quickly leading Alice and Aurey to the police station. When they looked for help, however, there was only one police officer.
“Sir, we heard shootings sounding like they were close by.” Alice said, out of breath. “Can you get a police team down there quickly?”
“I’m afraid not, our officers are currently all dispatched, crime rates have seemed to sky-rocketed here. The majority of our men are dealing with a student who assaulted a professor just north of here in Greenwood.” The officer replied, downcast. “I’ll go check it out, you three stay here!” The officer left the three in the police station.
“Should we go and help him?” Alice asked no one in particular.
“Uh… Um…” JT’s eyes darted around the room, looking very frightened.
“Maybe we should just stay here Alice, I’m not sure leaving JT like this would be such a good idea.” Aureylian whispered to her sister.
“Yeah I guess so, and me and the police don’t have the best record anyways. They’re always yelling at me for jumping on people’s cars.” Alice mumbled in agreement. Another gunshot rang out, much closer this time.
“Oh no, Aurey, get behind the desk!” Alice called out. Aurey noded in agreement, while JT is already hiding behind the desk. Alice looked out the window to see two large groups of men standing in front of each other, each of the 2 sides sporting a different color - with the policeman nowhere to be seen, though she couldn’t see the floor so that may have been why.
“Can one of you two look to see if there’s a way out the back?” asked Alice.When JT didn’t volunteer, Aurey sighed.
“Fine I’ll do it.” Aurey said, getting up from behind the desk and walking to check the back.
“There’s a window back here that we could go through, then we could take the long way back to the house” Aureylian called out to her sister.
“Yes, freedom!” JT whooped as he quickly got up and ran towards and out the window. Alice quickly checked behind the police desk, she found a loaded pistol with 6 shots.
“Just in case”. She whispered to herself.
“Okay, let’s go then.” Alice said as she and Aurey went through the window. The three quickly ran through the back of town, they were about half way when they heard a chorus of gun shots go off, and Alice stopped.
“Aurey, you and JT go back to the house.” She said sternly.
“What are you gonna do Alice?” Aurey asked, her voice shaking slightly, concerned for her sister.
“Just go, I’ll be there shortly.”
“C’mon, you heard the lady, let’s go, go, go!” JT said, not wanting to stay in place for a long time.
Aurey and JT began to run back to the appartment as Alice went back towards the shootings, jumping in a tree where she hoped the people involved wouldn’t notice her.
When she looked down she saw multiple dead bodies, some shot through the head, some not. The only people still alive were two men, both wearing red and white bandanas wrapped around their heads.
“Nice work Pause.” The scrawnier of the two men said to his partner.
“Eh, ain’t no big deal Enzo, I knew we could take these nerds” The taller, meatier looking man, that Alice assumed to be Pause, replied.
“Oh god…” Alice breathed in a very low whisper. Alice then pulled out her phone and texted Aurey, saying to call the cops again, However when the message sent a very loud “BING” was made. Alice’s only words were:
“ Oh, shi-!”
Yeah, sorry about the dip in quality (note to self: don't trust Scoot's six month old writing skills so much)…… This was kinda written at midnight… On christmas eve…… So, not much time for proofreading - or even the full re-write I normally do. Also, not being allowed to touch the dialogue is harsh (I hate you, quotes from actual people! Why must you be set in stone!).
