The Fallen Silence (Fated fic)
Feb. 14th, 2016 01:43 pmBc I love Shred and wished there was more of her in the chapter, so I wrote a sort of alternate version of events.
PLEASE DON'T read this unless you have read chapter eighty-five of Fated - you WILL be spoilered.
Shred was distracted from the weirdness of the tall man zapping out of existence when she saw Zekara fall to what she thought – but couldn’t quite be sure – was an arrow fired from the bow held in Nia’s own hands. She gasped and turned to run towards the scene, as she did so seeing Arra run towards Nia and be promptly beheaded by Nak.
No. This was all wrong. Her friends were killing at each other and with the terrifying threat of the Hostiles right before them, they couldn’t afford this sort of murder. Shred rushed at Nia, who’d dropped to her knees, and saw Specterveil approach the girl.
Nia appeared tiny in the treacherous shadow of the monster, who raised his claws. Shred yelled wildly, seeing Nia’s death already secured as fate. Shred could only watch in horror as the arc of his claws did not alter and he brought them down, with a sickening weight, into the chest of the prone Davion.
Shred screamed, louder than she’d ever heard herself scream. It drowned out the battle around her and she rushed to her friend’s body. Nia was mutilated and bloody. Without even thinking about the danger Shred dropped her swords, scooping up the Davion as she bled out and carried her away from the battle. Tears clouded her vision but she kept moving, not watching as Iirkolav took Kaen No Mai and destroyed Specterveil.
Shred wished she’d been the one to kill Specterveil. She wished there was anything she could do to get revenge. She thought she’d known death; Skullblades are used to violence and anger and fighting, but this was so, so different.
Shred heard the noises die down, the ceasing of the monsters was like a breath swept over the battlefield. She still kept moving though, the anger and grief in her head providing plenty of background noise to her movements.
Shred stopped by a tree and dropped the limp corpse in the grass. It was still too terrible to look, and Shred did not; she sat beside the body of her dead friend and wept, watching the battlefield dissolve into an almost too eerie silence.
And it was over. Nia was dead and Zekara and Arra and Katrin, and Marcus. Shred wondered why the cost of saving the world was so high.
Edit: Specterveil has no legs. I beef'd him
