So. I'm officially an uncle, and in celebration, I guess here's a sign up with a bit of an intro to let you know a bit about what you're signing up for? Also, look. We've revived the plauge.
The Culling is the test to determine whether someone is a true hero, or just a remarkable person. One has to down a horrible tasting concoction consisting of: the blood of a troll, a halverish egg, and the soul of a reaper. The group to be Culled must extract these ingredients however they see fit. Evil or corrupt people often choose to kill these beings. Good or pure people usually try to do anything to prevent having to kill these poor beings. Heroes don't feel anything from it. Anything else goes through unbearable pain. Those that don't survive are given a hero’s burial. Once The Culling is complete, the heroes select names to go by, as tradition dictates that heroes give up all identity and start anew.
My own Culling was truly interesting. I was there with 2 other people. Red, as I called her, was a tiny little spitfire with hair the color of blood and eyes like blue diamonds, I think she was from Metascolla. She had a perfectly innocent demeanor, but she was a spell weaver, and a vicious one at that. I firmly believed she was evil based on the way she set the forest troll ablaze and ripped it limb from limb with her whirlwinds. It was painful to watch, but she got the job done. When all was good and done, she settled on Furiosa
The other fellow, I nicknamed Whisper, which he stuck with, due to his insatiable need to talk. He was a tall and sort of spindly fellow with shaggy brown hair and a smile that never went away, apparently from Halveria. He was the master of impossible shots, taking the captain of a ship of buccaneers’ head off with his pistol from the edge of cannon distance while we were on our way to his homeland for the halverish. When we found a halverish nest, he clipped the mother’s wing while Red grabbed the egg.
I myself was fairly deadly with a sword thanks to my days in the Spoila Cru army and the campaigns in The Colonies, though I owe my strength to my heroic blood. I was strong enough back then to put the reaper’s steed on its side despite being off my rocker. Red and Whisper were out cold so it was all me. While it was trapped under its horse I plunged my sword into its chest and pulled out the firey soul it housed. I scrambled away and grabbed my fellow recruits. It wasn't long before it was back on its horse, hunting for a replacement soul. I chose Soul Stealer for my name.
We made it back to The Master, Archon, who oversaw our Culling and recruitment. He produced some sort of ceremonial goblet, poured the troll’s blood in, cracked the halverish’s egg emptying the contents within, and dropped the soul of the reaper into it. The drink bubbled up before settling. He passed it to Red who took a sip. Her face scrunched up and she gagged. She pushed it towards Whisper, who took a long drink from it. The fact that he seemed to want more still confounds me. Archon took it from him and passed it to me. I finished it off, a decision I still regret. The taste was bitter, only describable as someone stabbing your throat with a million little needles and lighting a hellfire inside your stomach. Luckily, we all enjoyed being, well, heroes. From there, Archon taught us the ways of the hero. And now, my recruits, I must ask you. Who are you?
