Chapter Twenty-Eight

Death From Above

Street 12, Sector SOV. March 21, 2272. Time instance 842N.

“I don’t like this,” Zahnra muttered as they walked down the street, following hand signals from Gali ahead of them. “We’re too exposed and right in the middle of SOV.”

“Kyir needs these parts,” Tanadin reminded her. “Plus this will disorient SOV even more. They’ll think that only their citizens could get this far into the se-”

She was interrupted by Nine whipping around and shooting a two thousand unit that had come around the corner. She dropped dead instantly without a sound.

“...this far into the sector,” Tanadin continued. “We’re stronger than they know, probably. Like that.”

“How do we know this is the right warehouse?” Kyir hissed. “Nine and Seven don’t have detailed maps of SOV, do they?”

Tanadin shrugged. “I don’t know. Fall certainly does, though. If they didn’t before, she’s undoubtedly transferred the file to them by now.”

“Which building is it?” Geek asked, narrowing her eyes and looking around. Nine pointed it out, moving to walk next to her.

“Just up ahead.”

“Why isn’t there a guard?” Kyir asked suspiciously. “Shouldn’t they have a guard posted outside?”

“Not necessarily. Two and three thousand units are often better at range, so they have a three thousand unit inside watching the door from a distance away,” Seven explained. “That’s why I’m jumping in through the window to distract them.”

“Then anyone who can fight is coming in through the front to help him kill all the cyborgs,” Nine added. “Then everyone else comes in, we grab what we can, and we leave.”

“I like this plan,” Emma said, grinning.

“I don’t,” Shawn mumbled. “This seems really unsafe.”

“Fuck safety! That’s clearly a great policy,” Tanadin grinned as well. “We’re gonna die.”

As they approached the warehouse, Seven broke off from the main group and located the nearest window. He jumped and pulled himself in, causing Nine to mutter bad-temperedly about cybernetic legs. The second cyborg stood by the door and waited for a few seconds before pushing it open and stepping inside, several others following.

The three thousand unit in the center of the room wasn’t facing them- he was turning to shoot at Seven, and thus didn’t notice Nine until the first bullet slammed into his back. He turned but Nine was already on the move, distracting the three thousand long enough for Geek to summon Vel’kex from the book and set about destroying the cyborg.

Tanadin and Shawn charged a two thousand unit, flames and bullets biting into the cyborg’s flesh but not being as effective as they had hoped. Tanadin yelped as the blade on the cyborg’s arm sliced through her shoulder.

She didn’t have time to retaliate as Kyir darted over, sliced through part of the cyborg’s neck, and flashed away to his next opponent. Tanadin growled quietly as she put her hand on the wound, the glowing liquid that served as her blood leaking out between her flaming fingers.

Shawn immediately called for Scara and she hesitated as she approached. “I don’t know if I can heal that without burning myself.”

Tanadin looked at her like she was nuts. “My flames don’t burn unless I want them to. You’ll be fine. It’s just hot.”

Shawn looked away as Scara set about healing Tanadin’s arm. It freaked him out anytime he saw the flames passing harmlessly around someone’s hand. Instead he focused on Vel’kex and Geek trashing the three thousand unit, watching in wonder as the demons worked together wordlessly, Geek from a distance and Vel’kex up close. He flapped his wings to carry him away from the three thousand unit as it charged up an anti-magic pulse, breathing out a sigh of relief when he avoided it. Geek snarled and barked an incantation, green fire forming and twisting around her, coiling and-

Geek howled in pain as the two thousand unit behind her shot her in the shoulder, only missing vitals due to his damaged eye that had a bullet lodged in it. Vel’kex reacted immediately, roaring in rage and charging the two thousand unit. He tore its head off easily with his claws before returning to the burned and bleeding three thousand, who cried out and fell to the ground as a bullet impacted one of its eyes.

Geek looked up at where she suspected the bullet had come from and was surprised to see Cap perched on top of a tall box, reloading her rifle. Clearly her shot hadn’t taken out the two thousand unit, a slight miscalculation in the angle causing the bullet to not pass into the cyborg’s brain.

She hadn’t had that issue with the three thousand unit.

“Clear!” Nine shouted.

“Clear!” several other voices echoed, and with that, the other members of the rebellion that hadn’t been combatants entered the warehouse. Kyir began directing people on what to grab and what was of the highest priority. He located the parts he needed to fix Fall himself and shoved them into the bag he had brought along for the purpose.

Scara hesitantly approached Geek, who was nursing her wounded shoulder.

“I can heal that, if you’d like.”

“Please.”

“I keep healing shoulders today,” Scara muttered as she got to work. “First Tanadin’s, then yours.”

“It’s an easy place to hit, I suppose. Vel’kex, listen to Kyir. Help us carry this stuff back.”

“Yes, mistress.”

Cap slowly dropped down off of the box she had been standing on and approached Geek, who was cringing at the feeling of her flesh knitting itself back together. “Sorry about that two thousand unit. I thought I’d killed him with that bullet.”

“It’s fine. I’m not dead, so it’s not an irreparable mistake.” Geek shrugged, aggravating her injured shoulder and making Scara growl at her. “Ow. Sorry.”

Cap nodded. “At least it’s down.” She paused, tilting her head slightly as if listening. “Right.” She turned and walked over to one of the shelves, picking things up without any apparent prompting from Kyir. He noticed this and frowned, stepping over to her.

“What are you doing?”

“Grabbing things you haven’t noticed.”

“What did you-” Kyir blinked as he recognized the parts and what he could do with them. “What...how did…”

“Intuition. Would you like me to put these in your bag?”

Kyir nodded and opened the bag, helping her pack up the parts. “Let’s hurry up, people! We don’t have long until some other goddamn cyborgs show up and then we’re fucked!”

“Lovely,” Emma muttered as she tossed a part to Shawn. “I love getting fucked by large numbers of cyborgs.”

“Kinky,” Tanadin said, grinning.

“Wait, I meant- oh, dammit!”

Seven frowned. “I don’t understand. They’d want to capture or kill us- although, they probably wouldn’t bother capturing us and just kill us immediately. What does that have to do with it?”

Tanadin sighed and shook her head. “Nevermind, Seven. It’s a figure of speech.”

As soon as everyone had picked up as much as they could carry, Nine led them outside and back down the street towards the mountains. They had to stop and fight off a couple of patrols as they went, but they got through mostly unscathed. Kyir looked over several of the parts as they moved, mentally categorizing them and trying to figure out what he could do with them.

He paused as he heard the sound of rockets and whipped around at the sound of screaming. Nine flying units swooped over the group- eight of them appeared to be two thousands, and the ninth…

“Five thousand!” Nine bellowed. “Focus on the five thousand!”

Kyir set down his bag and drew his sword, focusing his powers and shooting a bolt of electricity at the five thousand unit as it flew overhead. He missed narrowly and swore as he realized that it was targeting Geek specifically, knowing damn well what the Nethernomicon could do.

“M! Zahnra and I can’t get that thing!”

“I’m on it.” M raced off after the five thousand unit as it chased Geek and Vel’kex away from the group.

Kyir growled quietly and turned to see Tanadin and one of the earth elementals on the ground, twitching and gasping. He bared his teeth, recognizing the effects of an anti-magic pulse. They had fortunately not been hit directly, as they would likely be dead otherwise, but they were out of the fight at the very least.

He noticed one of the two thousand units suddenly drop from the sky and Cap beside him reloaded. Seven and Nine were also at work shooting the cyborgs out of the sky, but interestingly enough, they didn’t seem to be retaliating. Instead, they were targeting the more defenseless members of the group- those who had come along only to carry things.

SOV knows it’ll lose these units, Kyir realized. It just wants to take out as many of us as possible and to destroy the Nethernomicon if it can.

That pissed him off. He roared and continued to shoot bolts of lightning upwards, never hitting anything but it sure made him feel better when a unit swerved to avoid the crackling electricity.

“I don’t need your advice!” Kyir heard Cap growl, although no one seemed to be speaking to her. “I know how to aim!” She fired her gun and another unit dropped from the sky. Only two remained, and Kyir shuddered as he watched one fire the gun in its hand and drop someone standing right next to him. He shot another bolt of lightning after it, missing once more but getting Nine’s attention.

He shot at the cyborg, barely missing, before a large chunk of rock ripped itself from the ground and slammed into it. The only earth elemental that had managed to avoid being hit by the anti-magic pulses grinned in satisfaction.

The final two thousand unit fell without a sound as Seven’s bullet struck it in the side of the head. Everyone paused, breathing and scanning the area for enemies. Once they realized that they were, for the moment, safe, they started gathering up the parts that they had risked their lives for and checked the wounded and dead.

“We don’t have time to stick around. We need to move, now,” Seven snapped.

“Casualties?” Tanadin asked as she finally got to her feet, still shaking and weak.

“Four dead, more wounded,” Cap called. “We need to carry them back.”

“No. We need to go,” Seven insisted.

Tanadin turned to glare at him. “We-”

“-can have me bring them back with magic,” Geek finished as she and Vel’kex approached with M trailing behind. They were out of breath, a fact that Mars quickly noticed.

“Have fun, did you?”

“Unfortunately, no.” Geek mumbled something and her hands glowed faintly. The glow encompassed the corpses and they rose gently a few feet in the air, moving to follow behind her. “We should go.”

“Agreed. Grab what you can and let’s move.” Kyir picked up his bag of supplies again and led the way back, glancing around often as paranoia clawed at him.

Damn the Mainframe.

~~~
“There,” Kyir mumbled as he tightened the final part of Fall’s arm. “Your right arm should now function just as well as your left. Unfortunately I can’t fix your concussion with spare parts, but that should pass soon enough.”
“I’m already feeling much better,” Fall assured. “Thank you, Kyir.” He shut the control panel on her arm and she tightened both of her hands into fists. She waited until Kyir stepped back to extend the blades on both arms, grinning widely as she did so. “I can be useful, now. Once the world is done spinning, anyway.”
Kyir nodded swiftly. “Good. Now go get some rest. Mechanic’s orders.”
Fall got up and saluted sarcastically. “Yes, sir.” She left the room, still smiling.
“You weren’t an asshole,” Nine noted as soon as she was gone. “I’m surprised.”
“Yeah, well. It’s a wonder what having the proper parts to actually do shit with does to a man.” Kyir leaned against the wall. “Those damn shin units have me bothered, though. We can’t do a whole lot against flying shit like that. I couldn’t even hit them. If only I could fly...”
“The only fliers we have would get slaughtered. The aven aren’t powerful enough to go head-to-head with cyborgs, even two thousands, and people like Geek would just get hit with an anti-magic pulse.”
“We need shin units. But they’d be a serious pain in the ass to knock out or disable as, once again, we can’t reach the damn things.”
“That is a problem,” Nine agreed. “Hopefully we’ll capture some once we take the control center. This is where seven thousands are stored. If we could get even a dozen non-flying units, we could, for the most part, neutralize their fliers except for nine thousands, which can all fly anyway.
Kyir stopped leaning on the wall and circled Nine, a thoughtful expression on his face. “I wonder if there’s any way I could modify you and Seven to be more effective against those things…”
Nine laughed. “Other than add more guns, I don’t think so.”
Kyir continued circling until he stopped mid-step, eyes widening. “Nine,” he said slowly, “I think I have an idea.”
“Let’s hear it. It’s sure more than what I’ve got, which is cobwebs and echos.”
“What if we made you wings?”
“What?”
“I have the parts.” Kyir spoke faster as his excitement about his idea grew. “I could make you wings, Nine. Your back is entirely metal and I know how it’s wired. I could turn you into a flying seven thousand unit, no capturing other cyborgs required. You can get some custom Kyir touches on it, give you an edge over those fuckers.” A fierce, terrifying grin lit up his face. “We can fuck those guys up pretty badly.”
A similar grin slowly spread across Nine’s features as well. “Kyir, you’re a genius.”
Kyir lit up with a fiery, excited pride. “I don’t hear that as much as I should. Let’s get to work.”
“Fuck safety! That’s clearly a great policy,” Tanadin grinned as well. “We’re gonna die.”
O_O Tana do you have a death wish? If so, GG everyone....
Shawn immediately called for Scara and she hesitated as she approached. “I don’t know if I can heal that without burning myself.”
Tanadin looked at her like she was nuts. “My flames don’t burn unless I want them to. You’ll be fine. It’s just hot.”
Shawn looked away as Scara set about healing Tanadin’s arm. It freaked him out anytime he saw the flames passing harmlessly around someone’s hand.
Shawn you're freaking out how do you think I feel? My hands are engulfed in flame that isn't burning me while I heal Tana's shoulder, I'm the one freaking out while trying to heal at the same time XD
Scara hesitantly approached Geek, who was nursing her wounded shoulder.
“I can heal that, if you’d like.”
“Please.”
“I keep healing shoulders today,” Scara muttered as she got to work. “First Tanadin’s, then yours.”
Watch your backs people please XD At least healing Geek's shoulder shouldn't make me collapse from exhaustion as I did when I healed Sadie.
Geek shrugged, aggravating her injured shoulder and making Scara growl at her. “Ow. Sorry.”
Geek stay still dammit, don't make me call Vel'kex over here to hold you down, 1) Vel'kex's hotness (literal and figurative would distract me) and 2) Vel'kex restraining you could lead to an NSFW situation and this is not the time or the place for that XD
“Lovely,” Emma muttered as she tossed a part to Shawn. “I love getting fucked by large numbers of cyborgs.”
“Kinky,” Tanadin said, grinning.
“Wait, I meant- oh, dammit!”
OMG Emma XD
*pats Seven on head* XD
SOV knows it’ll lose these units, Kyir realized. It just wants to take out as many of us as possible and to destroy the Nethernomicon if it can.
Cyborgs on a Kamikaze mission.
“I don’t need your advice!” Kyir heard Cap growl, although no one seemed to be speaking to her. “I know how to aim!”
Kyir now knows that Cap speaks 'to herself'.
“Four dead, more wounded,” Cap called. “We need to carry them back.”
Welp there goes my quiet evening of book reading, someone put a pot of coffee on XD
Geek finished as she and Vel’kex approached with M trailing behind. They were out of breath, a fact that Mars quickly noticed.
“Have fun, did you?”
Mars as I said before not the time or the place, though I'm sure Geek and Vel'kex will work through their shared near death experience when we get back to base XD
“We need shin units. But they’d be a serious pain in the ass to knock out or disable as, once again, we can’t reach the damn things.”
“That is a problem,” Nine agreed. “Hopefully we’ll capture some once we take the control center. This is where seven thousands are stored. If we could get even a dozen non-flying units, we could, for the most part, neutralize their fliers except for nine thousands, which can all fly anyway.”
If they successfully capture SOV they'll have a small army of disconnected cyborgs.
Kyir stopped leaning on the wall and circled Nine, a thoughtful expression on his face. “I wonder if there’s any way I could modify you and Seven to be more effective against those things…”
Tana are you trying to give me an opportunity to write Sevenshock9? XD
“What if we made you wings?”
“What?”
“I have the parts.” Kyir spoke faster as his excitement about his idea grew. “I could make you wings, Nine. Your back is entirely metal and I know how it’s wired. Would those parts be the ones that Cap grabbed at the suggestion of I'm assuming Mentor? Also Kyir you're a one of a kind fucking genius XD
I may just do that, probably not today though; plus I still need to finish the story I started when I joined about Jimmy's prompting in Blood and Gold.
Seven's awkwardness makes him adorable though, just want to sit him down with a plate of milk and cookies and pat him on the head XD
Ah ok, just wondered if Mentor might have some kind of ghost future sight or something and saw this need and was like "Cap grabs those, we're gonna need them". XD
A) these quotes are awesome. B) your comments in between the quotes make them even better. Especially "Geek stay still dammit, don't make me call Vel'kex over here to hold you down, 1) Vel'kex's hotness (literal and figurative would distract me) and 2) Vel'kex restraining you could lead to an NSFW situation and this is not the time or the place for that XD" That one made me laugh. <3 you, Scara!
Thanks XD *hugs Lurkiest Lurker*
When I've quoted bits that my character makes an appearance in I just type what I think would be going through her mind. ^_^
You'll probably laugh at Geek's response when I put that bit into the chat:
Geek: Oh yes restrain me Vel'kex I've been naughty ;)
Geek is awesome XD
