Another combination of two of the prompts from my writing course.

Hope you enjoy.

Cassie sat down at her computer desk in her bedroom, today she would get it done. She’d ordered the Last Will and Testament kit from a recommended online retailer, all the reviews said it was easy to fill out and seeing as she didn’t need anything complicated she thought it was well suited to her situation. Cassie was in good health and lived a sedentary life now that she was retired. However, there was no need to rush this, she had no dependants and had never married, there would be no squabbling relatives, just her sister who now lived overseas.

Cassie certainly didn’t want to sit for hours and pay what she thought were unreasonable prices to get this done through a solicitor; she felt uncomfortable enough facing it herself, let alone talking everything through with someone she didn’t know. But first she needed a cup of coffee, how silly of her not to have made one before she sat down.

A brief time later and Cassie was back at her desk. She looked at the Will kit, still neatly wrapped in its cellophane pouch just to her left. She would do it today. But first she’d check her emails. There was a lengthy email from her sister detailing this week’s exploits, hiking near her New Zealand home this time with her latest love interest. Cassie chuckled and shook her head, Alex had never been one to settle down for long, no interest in having children either, so there were no nieces and nephews to see pictures of, just selfies with magnificent backdrops and beautiful landscapes. Cassie perused the email further, Alex was planning to come visit next week, joyous news, though unexpected as usual, Cassie sighed, her sister never was one to give a great deal of notice for plans. Cassie wrote back replying that of course Alex could stay in her spare room and she’d make their favourite of their mum’s recipes for dinner that first night.

The kit forgotten, Cassie grabbed her coffee and moved to inspect the spare room. Upon opening the door, Cassie groaned, she’d forgotten that she’d left all the boxes of Christmas decorations in here instead of packing them back in the attic. The afternoon was spent tidying up the previously hastily packed boxes, (down on the 12th night and all that), and then moving them up into the attic. It wasn’t until Cassie was preparing her dinner that she realised that she hadn’t done her Will, it was too late in the day to do it now, oh well she could do it tomorrow; but first she had to dust and hoover the spare room.

The next morning Cassie breakfasted and then went straight to cleaning the spare room. Once the spare room was done, she thought to herself that it had been at least a few weeks since she had done the housework, her eyes hit the fluff gathering on the hallway carpet, mind thinking of the dust gathering on the bookshelves downstairs and the piles of paperwork on the coffee table; and so, Cassie set to work cleaning the rest of the house, stopping only to eat a quick sandwich, before continuing. Once the house was spotless and smelling of furniture polish, Cassie settled back into her armchair with a cup of tea, she’d treat herself to a takeaway tonight, she was far too tired to cook or to concentrate on doing the Will today.

The remaining few days before Alex’s visit, Cassie busied herself with washing bed-linen and running errands, always forgetting about the Will kit sitting on her desk in the corner her bedroom.

The day of Alex’s visit arrived, Cassie had offered to pick Alex up at the airport, but Alex had politely declined seeing as her flight was arriving that evening and she knew Cassie didn’t really like driving in evening traffic. Cassie looked down at her shopping list, everything she needed for her mum’s signature beef stew and dumplings; she’d put this onto cook as soon as she got back, and it would simmer happily away until Alex arrived that evening, giving Cassie plenty of time to finally sit down and complete that Will Kit. Cassie locked up and set off towards the supermarket, it was only a short walk and carrying the small amount of shopping home would be no trouble.

Cassie was almost home, crossing the road weighed down slightly with her ingredients when a car soared around the corner, much too fast for anyone to react, no time for Cassie to move out of the way, no time for the driver to stop before hitting her. Cassie’s world sparked as she flew from the impact, shopping scattering in all directions as her hands released the bag handles, head spinning Cassie gazed dimly at the cloud scudded blue sky, thoughts whirling between Alex’s visit and her memories, as her vision dimmed her mind’s eye rested on her desk and the waiting Will Kit, and she realised that she’d left it too late.
